Provinzialkonzil; 1553
Summoned by archbishop Dowdall after he was restored to his see on 23 October, though the precise date is unknown. The purpose of the synod was to reform abuses and to check the spread of Protestantism. Married clergy, and those still living in concubinage, were deprived. Abuses connected with the misappropriation of benefices were condemned and it was ordered that all furnishings and ornaments that had previously belonged to the church should be restored. The clergy were ordered to wear their traditional habits and not to charge for administering the sacrament of baptism. Parish priests were also obliged to provide sermons at least four times a year, and to hire competent preachers if they could not do it themselves.
