Mell(ifontis)-Droghedanum / Mellifont-Drogheda

Provinzialkonzil der Kirchenprovinz Armagh; 1157

An Armagh provincial synod that deposed the king of Meath and endowed the monastery of Drogheda. The president of the synod was Gilla meic Liac, the archbishop of Armagh and there were seventeen bishops present, as well as several Irish kings and a large number of other people whose identity is not specified. After the synod banished Donnchadh Macleachlainn, the king of Meath, it appointed his brother Diarmaid in his place. The two brothers continued to fight each other, and it was not until 1160 that Diarmaid secured the kingdom for himself. He then reigned until the arrival of Henry II of England in 1169. At the same time, the church of Drogheda received a grant of land, 140 cows and at least 120 ounces of gold in endowment from members of the Meath royal family.
