In the aftermath of the Second Vatican Council, interest in the history of Church Councils was newly ignited. In 1968 Walter Brandmüller and Remigius Bäumer initiated a grant research project on the ecumenical and regional Councils.
The Annuarium Historiae Conciliorum, an international research journal on the Councils, edited by Walter Brandmüller and Remigius Bäumer, was first published in 1969.
In 1979 and 1980 the first two volumes of the book series “Presentations” (“Darstellungen”) and “Investigations” (“Untersuchungen”) on the Councils were published.
Congresses which bring the authors of the book series and journals together with specialists and colleagues interested in the same research topics have taken place regularly in Reisensburg since 1972.
A lexicon is being developed to synthesize conclusions collected so far about the Councils and point towards future research.
The research project on the Council History is currently being supervised by Peter Bruns (Bamberg), Johannes Grohe (Rome), and Thomas Prügl (Vienna).
