On the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the First Vatican Council and its suspension in view of the imminent capture of the city by the troops of the Risorgimento, a volume entitled “Il Concilio Vaticano I e la Modernità”, ed. by Martin Baumeister, Andrea Ciampani, François Jankowiak and Roberto Regoli (Roma: G&B Press 2020 [= Miscellanea Historiae Pontificae 72], 792 pages) has been published. The book is based on several years of interdisciplinary research on the significance of the First Vatican Council in contemporary history, on which the DHI, the LUMSA, the Pont. Università Gregoriana and Université Paris-Saclay, Faculté Jean Monet have participated.
The essays by thirty-six scholars (Table of contents attached) deal with the Council's relationship to modernity from three main points of view: a) The Church's interaction with the modern social and institutional processes that triggered the convening of the Council; b) The need for a collegial response from the Pope and the Council in the face of the challenges faced by the Catholic Church and, accordingly, for the formulation of positive proposals to revitalize Catholicism in modern society; c) The perception and reception of the Council's events for the period from the 1st to the 2nd Vatican Council.
